Wedding Music Planning Guide

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage! I am honored to play a part in your special day and hope this page can help guide you as you plan for your ceremony.

In a general sense, music that is appropriate for a Catholic Mass is appropriate for a Wedding Liturgy. It is not necessary for you to make any selections, but if you prefer to select the music, I have assembled a list of commonly used songs at Wedding Liturgies.

You may choose:

  • One or Two Processionals (Bridal Party & Bridal Entrance)

  • Gloria (Only if Presiding Priest decides to include it)

  • Psalm Response

  • Mass Setting (Holy, Memorial Acclamation, Great Amen, Lamb of God - sung at every Mass *Recordings Given: Holy & Lamb of God)

  • Blessed Virgin Mary Song (If allowed by priest)

  • Recessional (Exit from church)

  • Up to five hymns:

    • Opening Hymn (not common)

    • Song of praise post-vows (not common)

    • Unity Candle (if allowed by priest)

    • Preparation of the Gifts

    • Communion

    • Communion Reflection (To be decided by couple: Sung only if needed (communion goes long), Shorten Communion song to include Communion Reflection or Sung after Communion song is completed while congregation is seated)

It is my hope that all in the assembly will lift their voices in joyful song together. If you would like to request a well-known religious song not found in your church's hymnals, I will do my best to accommodate your request. However, it will need to be approved through the music director, the presider, and the parish pastor. Popular love songs that are not religious are not usually permitted during the Mass. This website page has just been created. It is a work in progress - not all songs have been recorded but you can easily google the song to find a recording.

For your planning purposes, here is an explanation of the music for your liturgy:

Opening Hymn (optional, not common)

Glory to God (optional)

Psalm Response

Alleluia (Celtic Alleluia, unless otherwise requested)

Song of Praise (optional, not common)

Unity Candle (optional)

Preparation of Gifts

Mass Parts

Communion Reflection (optional)

Blessing of the Virgin Mary (optional)

Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions! I hope that this time of planning will be filled with the joy and peace of Christ as you grow closer together in love.
